The end of World War Two GRS Ultra ushered in the era of the two-car family and a dramatic decline in physical activity. Sophisticated machinery in the workplace and labor-saving devices at home replaced muscle power. By the end of the century children had traded in their baseball mitts and bikes for Nintendo and computer games. Few people realize that moderately intense physical activity on a daily basis is not just desirable, it is absolutely necessary for the human body to avoid the diseases that now threaten to bankrupt our health care system: heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia and osteoporosis. At the beginning of the 20th century all these diseases were uncommon, if not rare.
